Premier League team of the week: Englishman dominate as Jamie Vardy, Manchester United and Tottenham star

first_img Right-back: James Tomkins – No right-backs particularly stood out but West Ham’s James Tomkins did well to expose the space left by Jordan Ayew’s red card. He should have had an assist for Enner Valencia with his fizzed cross but the Ecuadorian headed over. 11 11 Striker: Harry Kane – The race for a starting berth at the Euros for England is really hotting up, with Harry Kane also netting twice this week. He is forming a fantastic understanding with Alli which has driven Tottenham to above Arsenal in the Premier League table. Centre-back: Nicolas Otamendi – It was far from easy-going for Manchester City at Sunderland and they could have dropped points if not for Nicolas Otamendi’s injury-time goal line headed clearance. Centre-back: Scott Dann – Despite being on the losing side, Scott Dann put in the type of performance that was generating England buzz earlier in the season. Dann is also Crystal Palace’s second top scorer in the Premier League and has scored four times as many goals as all of the Eagles’ strikers combined. Left-back: Cameron Borthwick-Jackson – Cameron Borthwich-Jackson was outstanding, along with the rest of his Manchester United teammates, against Stoke. The 19-year-old left-back was an attacking force throughout and his whipped cross for Jesse Lingard’s opening goal was the catalyst for a great Red Devils performance. 11 11 11 Centre midfield: Ross Barkley – Ross Barkley was back to his sparkling best on Wednesday night against Newcastle. Although his two goals were both penalties, he controlled the game and terrorised the Magpies’ defence as well as striking the crossbar with a thunderous strike. Could he and Alli be starting together at the Euros? 11 11 11 Was this the week where we will look back on at the end of the season and say ‘that is where Leicester won it’?Arsenal were typically Arsenal in their goalless draw with Southampton at the Emirates, while Manchester United were untypically thrilling in attack during their 3-0 victory over Stoke.Chelsea remain unbeaten under Guus Hiddink but it was yet another draw for the Blues and Manchester City managed to keep pace with league leaders Leicester with a hard-fought 1-0 win against Sunderland.England’s Euro 2016 hopefuls really put their hands up this week and it is highlighted with nine of the XI being English. But who were the standout performers of the week? To fit everyone in, we have gone with a modern and fashionable 4-2-3-1 formation. Click the arrow above, right, to see who made it into our Premier League team of the week! 11 Centre midfield: Dele Alli – Dele Alli has taken the Premier League by storm this season and scored another goal and claimed an assist in the 3-0 win over Norwich this week. Alli has now scored seven goals this season – the same amount as Jack Wilshere has managed in eight years. 11 11 Goalkeeper: Fraser Forster – Click the right arrow above to see who else made our team… – Fraser Forster was in outstanding form this week, keeping out all 11 of Arsenal’s shots on target in Tuesday’s goalless draw. Heurelho Gomes was outstanding against Chelsea but Forster’s display – which meant it was four straight clean sheets for the Saints – was one of the performances of the week. Left wing: Anthony Martial – Like Rooney, Anthony Martial has been in terrific form this year and turned Stoke’s defence inside out. His goal was a fantastic finish after a brilliant move which started in the Red Devils’ own penalty area. Right wing: Jamie Vardy – Jamie Vardy looked like his goalscoring had tailed off of late but his stunning brace – which included a goal-of-the-season contender – has kept Leicester City firmly in the title picture as they sit pretty at the top of the tree. Striker: Wayne Rooney – Wayne Rooney has been in stunning form since the turn of 2016, having now scored five goals and provided two assists in five Premier League games. Rooney is hitting form just at the right time for both club and country, with England’s strike force looking very healthy at this moment. last_img read more
