The CASPEr group conducts their experiments at the PRISMA+ Cluster of Excellence at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz (JGU) and the Helmholtz Institute Mainz (HIM). CASPEr is an international research program that uses nuclear magnetic resonance techniques to identify and analyze dark matter….This particular form of sideband analysis enabled the scientists to search for dark matter in a new frequency range. No dark matter signal was detected, as the CASPEr team reports in the latest edition of Science Advances, allowing the authors to rule out ultralight dark matter with couplings above a particular threshold. At the same time, these results provide another piece of the dark matter puzzle and complement previous results from the CASPEr program reported in June, when the scientists explored even lower frequencies using another specialized NMR method called comagnetometry.They didn’t find it in June, either. Share Facebook Twitter Google + LinkedIn Pinterest Historical farm data is nice to have, but it can’t make money or improve the operation when it’s sitting in a file cabinet.Keith Kemp, a checkoff farmer-leader from West Manchester, is using all of that data from his farm to continue improving.“Each year we grid sample, soil test and do the mapping at planting and harvest time,” Kemp said. “During the winter months we take all of that data we’ve collected for the year and overlap that with data from years past. We’ll analyze those results and come up with our best decisions on population seeding, along with setting up our variable rate fertilizer and nitrogen plans.”Kemp will take an ever more centralized approach to his data this year by surveying his farm on half-acre grids. This long-term data collecting strategy is helping Kemp not only improve the outcome of a crop in a certain field; it is also helping him better the soil health where he sees issues pop up year after year.Some changes are being made to the game plan this year after sifting through 2016 data. Kemp sees his farm pulling back on population numbers this spring.“We think we’re over populating some of these corn and soybean varieties,” Kemp said. “We will be working on some tests with Ohio State on soybean plant population and maybe getting them down to 70,000 to 80,000.”New planting technology on Kemp’s farm is one of the reasons he believes this change will be necessary.“We are getting better placement with our current equipment and we are getting more seeds out of the ground,” Kemp said. “This will not only make us more efficient in the long run, but more sustainable as well, which is what the customers of soy are demanding.”Those same customers are asking for something more on a local level from a water quality standpoint. Data comes in handy on that front too.“We can take all of this data we are collecting from our farm and show the end users and our neighbors exactly how much fertilizer we are using year in and year out and prove that we’re not putting too much out there,” Kemp said. “It’s really exciting to have the data and the records to back up everything that we are doing to improve how we do what we do on the farm to remain sustainable.”And with sustainability comes profitability.“When you do things in a sustainable way you’re not wasting anything and that should raise the bottom line to a higher level,” Kemp said. “Every bushel counts and if I’m not taking advantage of my data then I’m missing all of these opportunities to be a better farmer. There is no room for mistakes right now in the farm economy. One of the most interesting beef demand trends over the last few years has been the growth in demand for briskets. It’s not just new craft BBQ joints popping up everywhere in Texas, but even big chains like Arby’s jumping in and they all serve brisket.Briskets used to be an inexpensive beef cut that benefited from long, slow cooking at low temperatures. They are no longer inexpensive. What used to be a very inexpensive cut, the primal brisket is now only behind the primal rib and loin in value. In the last week of May, the comprehensive cutout brisket value was $213.47 per hundredweight (cwt), up 19.4% from the same week the year before. Just during May brisket prices jumped from $194.39 to $213.47 by the end of the month. The monthly average price was up 12% compared to last year. In comparison, only the primal short plate was up as much as 1% and the primal rib and loin were both down about 1% from a year ago.Many top-end BBQ joints working to produce a truly exceptional meal use and advertise USDA Prime or branded briskets. USDA Prime briskets hit $215.76 per cwt at the end of May and were outpaced by branded primal briskets that hit $220.82 per cwt. Prime, branded, and Choice primal briskets are up 21% compared to a year ago, while Select and Ungraded are “only” up 17% and 15%, respectively.This is a case where demand is outstripping supply, leading to quickly rising prices. Fed steer and heifer slaughter is up a little less than 2% through May compared to last year. Quality grade composition of beef supplies matter. About 8.1% of cattle graded, graded Prime in May, compared to 6.9% in May 2018. Slightly fewer cattle graded Choice 70.1% in May 2019 compared to 70.4% in May 2018. Select supplies were down just over a percentage point in May. Increasing steer slaughter and cattle on feed should increase available supplies in coming months.The future growth rate in the nation’s cattle herd will be critical for brisket prices. While we cut many products from other primal beef cuts, a brisket is a brisket (forgive my simple economist description). As herd growth slows and overall cattle prices decline, brisket supply growth won’t keep up with current demand growth. It’s likely that restaurant prices will rise in response to higher wholesale brisket costs to try to preserve a bit of margin.
