Is Kane the solution to Zidane’s problems?

first_imgTransfers Kane the solution to Madrid’s problems but it’s too late to save Zidane Peter Staunton Click here to see more stories from this author Chief Correspondent Last updated 1 year ago 03:50 1/14/18 FacebookTwitterRedditcopy Comments(65) Harry Kane Tottenham Everton Getty Images Transfers Real Madrid Real Madrid v Villarreal Villarreal Primera División Harry Kane Zinédine Zidane Tottenham Hotspur v Everton Everton Tottenham Hotspur Premier League Opinion The England striker became the first man to reach 20 goals this Premier League season on a day when los Blancos slumped to another La Liga defeat With every goal Harry Kane scores and every point Real Madrid drop, the prospect surely becomes ever more attractive at Santiago Bernabeu? And Saturday was just the kind of day to bring the stark reality of Real Madrid striking problems into focus. They rained 28 shots down on Villarreal’s goal and emerged with nothing to show for their rewards.A late sucker-punch condemned the European champions to their fourth league defeat of the season and left Zinedine Zidane facing a crisis he’s never faced before. Sure, the return of Sergio Ramos might tighten them up at the back but that’s not where the issue has been.Gareth Bale and Cristiano Ronaldo formed an ineffective partnership against Villarreal, toiling fruitlessly up top. Not for the first time this season, Real lacked a cutting edge.No Real Madrid player has scored more than four measly goals in league competition – a shocking statistic and one which is likely to condemn them to disappointment come the end of the season.Worse still, if their current malaise leaks into their Champions League campaign, then Zidane could quickly find himself out of a job.Paris Saint-Germain were among the best-performing clubs in the group stages and Neymar and Co. will be relishing tucking into this wounded animal next month.Madrid seem to be able to get by on muscle memory at times in the Champions League but the natural rhythm bestowed upon them by Zidane’s simplified style has now deserted them. They do not have the quality of individual performance – from Bale or Ronaldo, or anyone else for that matter – to fall back on. They look doomed.Harry Kane Real Scorers PSSo, despite what Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy says, the Kane links just won’t go away. The Madrid media and even some in England now see Kane as a Galactico-in-waiting.Madrid have been in this market before and brought in Luka Modric and Bale, two players who have helped themselves to three Champions League titles in the last four seasons.Levy stated before Saturday night’s dismantling of Everton at Wembley that he is confident all Spurs’ stars will be still at the club for the big kick off at their new White Hart Lane home next season.Contract negotiations are reportedly progressing nicely with Son Heung-min and Christian Eriksen currently, and further talks are planned with Kane to bump up his salary in order to ward off his many suitors.Son, here, was the best-in-show, supplying the opener and given Kane a tap-in for his first, but it will be the England man who again walks away with the headlines. He scored his 20th goal of the season – the first player to reach that milestone this term – and became only the third forward after Alan Shearer and Thierry Henry to score at least 20 in four consecutive Premier League seasons. Spurs are not big wage spenders like Manchester City or Manchester United and have come under increasing pressure to give their starters closer to their true market worth. It is well known that Kane could make more more elsewhere – not least the Bernabeu, where he would step into an immediate starting role. But this is supposed to be a new Spurs. If you’re looking for a selling club in north London these days, you’d be advised to check down the other end of the Seven Sisters Road at the Emirates. Manager Mauricio Pochettino plans on keeping this group together for the long term.Harry Kane Tottenham EvertonThe club are quite adamant that Kane is going nowhere but there is a world of difference currently in the ambitions between one white club and the other.Kane stated last week that he would stick around so long as it looked likely that Spurs would challenge for trophies. It would appear the Premier League title is out of sight for all bar Pep Guardiola this season, while Juventus must be overcome in the Champions League last 16.Maybe Kane fears becoming like Alexis Sanchez at Arsenal and one day waking up and realising he’s 29 and has won nothing of significance with the club.To counteract that, Spurs have got to show they are serious about success. If not, well, then Kane is good enough now to get it elsewhere. He exudes confidence and as his second goal here showed he can even miskick the ball and still watch it go in.That was his 98th league goal for Spurs – a club record – and more evidence that he is the complete package. He is exactly what Madrid need but unfortunately for Zidane it’s too late to save his skin.last_img read more

SAAM Buys Remaining Stake in Iquique Terminal Internacional

first_imgzoom Chilean port, towage and logistics services provider SAAM has, through its subsidiaries SAAM Puertos and SAAM Inversiones, acquired the 15% interest held by Grupo de Empresas Navieras (GEN) in Iquique Terminal Internacional (ITI) for USD 11.05 million. As a result, SAAM now controls 100% of ITI, which is described by the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) as the main port terminal in the far north of Chile and the fifth most important in the country.“This transaction is part of our growth strategy. Since we are already familiar with and operate the asset, the deal reaffirms our commitment to ITI and its employees,” Macario Valdés, SAAM’s CEO, commented.“The importance of northern Chile and trade with neighboring countries lays a foundation for good outlooks and opportunities to consolidate Iquique as the area’s main port for foreign trade,” Valdés added. As disclosed, with this acquisition, SAAM Puertos, which operates eleven port terminals in six countries in the Americas, continues to execute its strategy to grow in assets. In early 2017, the company acquired 51% stake in Puerto de Caldera, Costa Rica.In early April, SAAM announced plans to invest a total of USD 133.5 million this year. The port operator intends to invest USD 85 million in maintenance and extension of its current assets – San Antonio Terminal Internacional, Terminal Portuario Guayaquil and San Vicente Terminal Internacional.Last month, SAAM revealed that Terminal Portuario Guayaquil (TPG), a port it has operated in Ecuador since 2006, incorporated the facilities of the adjacent Trinipuerto bulk terminal through a 40-year lease. Trinupuerto terminal is expected to more than double TPG’s current container transfer capacity and enable it to enter the bulk cargo market.last_img read more

Delhi librarys hygiene pantry well used

DELHI — The Delhi Public Library is getting a new read on its patrons with its free hygiene pantry. The shelving unit, stocked and open to the public since early June, is called a Free Little Pantry. The concept is modelled after the popular Free Little Libraries which are around communities on private property and books that people can take to read.“We got the idea from the Simcoe Library, which opened a free pantry in April,” says Ron Klein of the Delhi Friends of the Library group.“It was successful and heavily accessed by people in the community.”The Delhi Sharing Pantry Food Bank is partnering with the Friends of the Library to help stock the pantry and deal with donations. The pantry is open to to all.The organizers don’t want food donations, which should continue to go to the food bank.Instead, they seek hygiene items, such as deodorant, shampoo, feminine hygiene products, toothbrushes and toothpaste, toilet paper and paper towels.“The library is a public place where many people come so it’s very convenient,” said Klein.“It’s been running for about a month now and, when we replenish things, we can tell it’s being well used.”Library patrons are asked to drop donations at the library’s front read more

US retail sales barely rise at start of holiday shopping

US retail sales barely rise at start of holiday shopping by Josh Boak, The Associated Press Posted Dec 14, 2016 6:41 am MDT Last Updated Dec 14, 2016 at 10:00 am MDT AddThis Sharing ButtonsShare to TwitterTwitterShare to FacebookFacebookShare to RedditRedditShare to 電子郵件Email In this Thursday, Dec. 8, 2016, photo, Hani Mikhail places a label on one of his mouth-blown glass ornaments for sale at his booth set up for the holidays at City Hall in Philadelphia. On Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2016, the Commerce Department releases U.S. retail sales data for November. (AP Photo/Matt Rourke) WASHINGTON – Americans increased their retail spending just slightly in November, a possible sign of lacklustre holiday shopping.Retail sales rose only 0.1 per cent in November, after a downwardly-revised 0.6 per cent growth in October, the Commerce Department said Wednesday.Consumers bumped up their purchases at restaurants and furnishers last month. But they also trimmed spending at auto dealers and department stores, limiting the overall advance in retail sales.“This report puts a slight blemish on an otherwise solid string of U.S. economic data,” said Michael Dolega, senior economist at TD Bank. “The disappointing headline suggests that consumers are yet to fully open their wallets despite continued job and income gains.”More Americans had seemed to enter the holiday season poised to shop. The improving job market has pushed unemployment down to 4.6 per cent and prompted signs of accelerating wage growth. Over the past 11 months, retail sales have risen a solid 3.1 per cent compared to the same period in 2015. The greater retail sales helped support overall economic growth.Consumer spending accounts for the majority of all U.S. economic activity. It has disproportionately contributed to an economy that expanded at an annual clip of just 1.8 per cent over the first nine months of 2016. And more Americans turned optimistic about the economy after Donald Trump’s presidential election with consumer sentiment improving.Still, the retail sales report suggests that some of that momentum stalled last month.Online and mail-order retailers posted a lukewarm 0.1 per cent gain, compared to a robust 11.5 per cent increase so far this year. Clothing sales were flat in November.Nor was every sales category increase an automatic win for consumers. Higher gasoline prices last month prompted a 0.3 per cent boost in sales at service stations.Yet the retail sales report does point to a steady evolution of the U.S. economy. As average hourly earnings have picked up 2.5 per cent over the past year, more Americans are comfortable eating out. Sales at restaurants and bars have risen 6 per cent so far this year. Rising home sales in 2016 have also helped building materials stores and furnishers, which have seen their sales advance 6.3 per cent and 3.9 per cent over the past 11 months. read more

Second man questioned and released without charge as police hunt Putney pusher

first_imgA second man questioned under caution has been released without charge over the assault of a woman who was pushed in front of a bus, the Metropolitan Police said. The man was arrested on August 12 after a jogger shoved a woman to the ground on Putney Bridge, south west London, in May.He was the second 41-year-old suspect to be cleared of involvement, following the release of Eric Bellquist, a US investment banker, earlier that day.A spokesman for the Metropolitan Police said: “Detectives investigating an incident where a man appeared to push a woman into the path of a bus continue to appeal for witnesses and information.”A second man, aged 41, was arrested on the afternoon of Saturday, August 12 on suspicion of grievous bodily harm following information received in response to a CCTV appeal about the incident on Putney Bridge on Friday, May 5.”The man was taken to a south London police station and following further enquiries, he was released with no further action later that day.”This followed the arrest of a 41-year-old man on Thursday, August 10 who was eliminated from enquiries on Saturday.” He added that there had been a “positive public response to the appeal so far”, with a range of information provided to investigating officers. Mr Bellquist, 41, a millionaire partner at a private equity firm, was ruled out of the inquiry after he proved he was abroad at the time of the alleged attack. He had been detained on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm in connection with the woman shoved into the road on Putney Bridge on May 5.CCTV caught the incident, which showed the bus swerving to avoid the 33-year-old woman, who was treated for minor injuries. The suspect was also seen jogging back over the bridge around 15 minutes later, but refused to acknowledge his victim when she tried to talk to him, police said. The jogger, who is wanted on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm, is described as white man, aged early to mid 30s, with brown eyes and short brown hair, wearing a light grey t-shirt and dark blue shorts. Selecting the optimum generator set solution is critical

first_imgPower constraints are quite common in mining. Such constraints currently facing South Africa and Africa have resulted in companies being requested to cut their power consumption by at least 10% in order to alleviate the pressure on the overburdened transmission and distribution infrastructure. This appeal will, of necessity, result in companies seeking alternative power sources to accommodate the energy requirements shortfall. However, cautions Craig Bouwer, Sales Engineer at Zest WEG Group’s Generator Set Division, there is an apparent lack of understanding of the many issues surrounding standby power. “Companies are generally unaware of how to assess the standby power requirements of a facility or building. By implication, this suggests that companies are also often unaware of what the optimal solution for a given application should be.”A standby power solution is an important capital expenditure decision that needs to be considered carefully in terms of the company’s overall requirements. Moreover, the supplier needs to have the necessary technical expertise and relevant experience to offer a customised solution. A key consideration for a standby power solution is to understand the environment in which the generator set has to function.Original equipment manufacturer Zest WEG Group’s Generator Set Division has a dedicated facility in Cape Town and offers generator sets ranging from 20 kVA units up to 250 kVA off-the-shelf products, 300 kVA to 2 000 kVA individual customised units as well as multiple sets to achieve turnkey solutions in excess of 12 MVA for large-scale applications or projects. The company has supplied a large number of bespoke generator set solutions based on the specific application and environment in which they operate.“A couple of recent examples include the containerised three-generator unit we designed and manufactured for DRA Minerals’ Liqhobong Diamond Mine in Lesotho and a turnkey power station for AVI Group. At Liqhobong, we designed a generator set container with a collapsible snow roof. When the roof is collapsed it facilitates easy transportation and once deployed on site prevents the build-up of snow on top of the container, and the subsequent blocking of the louvres,” says Bradley van der Spreng, Project Engineer, Zest WEG Group’s Generator Set Division. The scope of supply on the AVI project comprises three 1,000 kVA generator sets and three 1,000 kVA transformers. “What makes this project unique is that Zest WEG Group’s Generator Set Division is designing a custom built distribution system and electrical panel for synchronisation. The company is also supplying a 23,000 litre bulk fuel storage system to support this installation” adds van der Spreng. The successful implementation of these projects hinges on the company’s ability to determine potential solutions for the customer. Amongst these are consideration for sound restructuring methods, fuel systems, electrical reticulation and interfacing, the load and the duration that this load is required to be powered.“The type of load and the total power drawn should be measured by a qualified team from the generator supplier prior to recommending a particular diesel generator set. Following this, accurate load calculations can be carried out and a suitable system recommended. We look at the entire electrical infrastructure and not just the generator set itself. In this way we are able to recommend the power rating of the generator set,” says Bouwer.Another area where Zest WEG Group’s Generator Set Division’s experience comes to the fore is its knowledge of local regulations pertaining to different metropolitan areas. Regulations also differ with regard to the particulate levels of diesel fuel storage and sound decibel levels related to noise attenuation. In order to disseminate relevant and important information, we form close working relationships with consultants and, wherever possible, we become involved during the design stage of a project,” says van der Spreng. All equipment supplied by Zest WEG Group’s Generator Set Division is standard with a 12 month warranty. The Group has a dedicated service department, which offers basic maintenance contracts that include measures such as replacing the generator sets’ oil and filters. Extended or long term maintenance contracts are also offered where the equipment is for critical applications such as standby power at a hospital.Bouwer cautions that, while maintenance is critical, companies should take ownership of their generator sets. “We propose to mitigate risk and that a dedicated member of the customer’s staff be trained through our manufacture, test, installation and commissioning process. This enables the customer to be more self-sufficient and compliments all aspects of aftermarket support.“There are numerous factors to consider when selecting an appropriate fit for purpose solution so it important for companies to align themselves with a supplier who is qualified to discuss all eventualities. Flexibility in approach to design and engineering will ensure that the installation is geared towards minimising the capital cost and running expenses, whilst concurrently optimising energy output for an uninterrupted and reliable power supply,” van der Spreng concludes.last_img read more
