Nokia Theatre opens in downtown L.A. with Dixie Chicks

first_imgA light-hearted atmosphere of camaraderie and fun Thursday marked the opening night of the Nokia Theatre, L.A.’s newest concert venue. The plaza across from Staples Center was festooned with video screens showing sports and music clips, while concert-goers mingled, had drinks or munched pizza at an outdoor cafe. The curtain rose with a string of dates starring the Eagles and the Dixie Chicks. “There’s so much to look at,” said Judy Larsen of Santa Clarita, who works in the travel industry. “It’s such a nice surprise to see all of this.” AD Quality Auto 360p 720p 1080p Top articles1/5READ MOREGame Center: Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs, Sunday, 10 a.m.The peaceful easy feeling extended to the parking lot. On a night that had the Clippers playing across the street at Staples Center and a video-game expo occupying the Los Angeles Convention Center next door, streets were clear and there was plenty of parking in the surrounding lots. “Parking was so easy I couldn’t believe it,” said Long Beach resident Robin Morris, who works in the import-export business. “I didn’t expect to be able to park across the street and just walk right over.” The 7,100-seat, $100 million concert hall is part of a project that will eventually include a hotel, a nightclub and the Grammy Museum. The Nokia has already booked shows through the middle of next year, including a Chinese New Year’s celebration, rock acts and comedians. “Everybody seems to be in such high spirits,” said Charlene Hatago, a marketing assistant from Rowland Heights. “It really is spectacular. The lighting is really great outside. It brings a really friendly, happy feeling. It’s a lot of fun.” Cell-phone cameras clicked in the courtyard and one employee had a video screen attached to his back to give guests a closer view of the sport and music clips. “It`s so alive – which is unusual for a Thursday night,” said Shirley Kawashiri, an Alhambra legal assistant. “And it’s not even the weekend.” fred.shuster@dailynews.com (818) 713-3676160Want local news?Sign up for the Localist and stay informed Something went wrong.
